I grew up in a house where redesigning rooms as often as I liked and construction projects to upgrade them were welcome. The house being a 102 year old, slightly leaning, homey cottage in Larkspur with mismatching flooring, fixtures, and trims throughout helped becasue there was nothing I could hurt.Â
Once I honed changing spaces, I started dabbling in organizing them. As a kid my room was sprinkled with mismatching furniture, various pets in tanks, hundreds of plane tickets taped to the ceiling, and thousands of shells hot-glued all over the walls and door frames. It was a blast becuase my biggest worry was a hermit crab escaping or if I liked the new color I painted my room. I'd keep every free sticker, clothing item whether it was worn or not, and scrap from a craft or construction project, saving them for the perfect use just in case I'd need it. I never realized I could just donate or let it go and how much cleaner my space and head would feel with it gone. Now as an adult, I realize how peaceful and recharging an organized home can be. It gives you more energy to navigate and enjoy life's chaos happening outside of your space.
That led to my life becoming more organized, which led to being asked to help friends and family Edit their space and life in way that worked for them. Now I have the experience to help others with The Petty Edit.
The neglected pantry with 9 stale chip bags burried under newer items tempting your dog everyday to bring about a surprise vet bill that your kids, job, partner, travel plans, and life have let stay that way for years and the only time you notice it is when your mother in law is coming to town. We can probably tackle it in an evening or two.
The book you've been wanting to start writing for 10 years but the idea of finding an editor, publishor, and the hours and months of back and forth sending chapters and implementing edits to get it completed from start to finish sounds twice as hard as writing the book. I can help reasearch to find the right editor and publishor for you and facilitate some or all of the back and forth with them from your first sentense to getting the book in your hands. You can write.
You might have a vision for redesigning a room but no idea how to go about finding the furniture and decor pieces you want or the name of the paint color you loved from a Pinterest post you once saw that you can't find again. Give me a couple clues and I can do what my boyfriend calls "FBI agent search" and go find and curate all of them for you. I can also make you something custom that isn't sold in stores.
The value is not just in what work is being done, but also in it being done. Checked off and out of your life. It can take some people weeks, months, even years to find the motivation and time to do these things by ourselves. When you have a person you are paying lighting a fire under you, it's pretty incredible how much can be acomplished in a short period of time.
Author and professional organizer, Shira Gill's famous philosophy is edit before you organize and organize before you elevate. The average US home has 300,000 things in it. I recently found can of beans in my parent's pantry that expired in 1999. Organizing your space is best paired with first checking if you still need what you have in it. Once the vintage beans are gone and your space is organized, you might stop there or decide you want to elevate the space and make it look and function better with new or exhisting systems. You can find incredible pieces from Costco to RH to what you already have. The amazing part is there is no right or wrong, just what works for you, and me making it happen. As your hired personal assistant and fire under your you-know-what lighter.
